Steve studied Music at The University of Manchester where, in 2008 he achieved a First Class Honours degree; and in 2009 completed a Masters’ in Composition. Since then he has been composing and arranging music for all kinds of ensembles, including Orchestras, String Quartets, Big Bands and Brass Bands. He also produces electronic music, including Drum & Bass and other forms of EDM. Steve has collaborated with many different artists, as well as working on commissions for the BBC and Comic Relief.
In 2011 Steve co-founded Kaleidoscope Orchestra with his friend David Tagg-Oram. Their mission was to bridge the gap between Classical Music and other musical genres such as Drum & Bass, Dubstep and House. Since founding the orchestra, Steve has composed and arranged many suites of music featuring artists such as Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, Major Lazer, Pendulum, DJ Snake and Lady Gaga. These suites have been recorded by Kaleidoscope and have accumulated over 1.4million views on YouTube.
In 2018 Steve wrote an orchestral tribute to the late great Avicii (who died in April of that year.) The aim was to help raise awareness for the mental health of musicians. The piece was noticed by dance music label Cream who subsequently invited the orchestra to perform the tribute live at Creamfields 2018. The tribute was streamed around the World and was viewed by over 1 million people.
In 2014 Flux Pavilion asked Steve to work on orchestra arrangements for his album Tesla. The album was released in 2015 and features the orchestra on several tracks, including Ironheart and Feels Good.
Riot Jazz Brass Band
Since 2008 Steve has been the drummer and one of the composers in Manchester based - Riot Jazz Brass Band. The band has performed at festivals around the World, including Russia, Croatia, Italy, France, Germany, Romania, Andorra and Finland; as well as UK festivals - Glastonbury, Womad and Bestival.
The band appeared on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch in 2013 and have been played on BBC Radio 6 as well as other radio stations around the World. Steve writes many of the tunes performed by the band, and his music has been released on the band’s albums: Sousamaphone (2013), Incoming! (2015) and Live at Band on the Wall (2017.) The band recently featured on Swindle’s new album No More Normal.
Steve has collaborated with many artists and ensembles from a variety of musical genres. Including: Plan B, Flux Pavilion, London Elektricity, Dr Meaker, String Infusion and Etherwood.
In 2016, drum & bass pioneer and CEO of Hospital Records - London Elektricity (aka Tony Colman), asked Steve to put together a big band to perform his extensive library of music. Steve worked on the musical arrangements, directed the ensemble and played drums. The band performed at Glastonbury (2017), Let It Roll (Czechia), Audioriver (Poland) and Pahoda (Slovakia.) A live album was released from the Pahoda show and is available on Spotify & iTunes.
In 2012, Steve was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 to arrange a song by Justin Bieber for Baroque Orchestra. The piece was premiered live on air, performed by Robin Blaze and York Baroque Ensemble. The following year, Steve was commissioned by BBC Children in Need to arrange a One Direction song for full symphony orchestra. The piece was recorded by the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras.
